This is the second standalone novel from Adam, following the success of Boy Underwater last year. Again Adam handles some challenging subject matter with a wonderful and moving style. The central theme to the novel is that people should not be judged on where they are from. The story revolves around Veronique’s Grandmother, who was an immigrant to the country as a Vietnamese Boat Person, and has a secret buried in that turbulent history. As with Boy Underwater, the plot grows deeper and deeper as the children uncover more information about family history. Whilst this novel does deal with the same character in Cymbeline Igloo, it is very much a standalone, with other new characters central to the story.
